I want to give to this software the same note, 5 - excellent but some words I have also to add. I'm using for editing most of time Pinnacle, it is expensive but it has a nice more interface and also much more effects.
But Pinnacle doesn't do the elementary thing, stamping a subtitle (.ssa) to the movie. This function is needed by all digital video users for stamping datecode. I asked to the Pinnacle to add this function giving your software as example but they don't want to do it. From you, I'd like to see a better interface (with controlling more videos than one at the same time), and also if it's possible to extract datecode from the digital video (original datecode), or not just to extract but also directly to stamp it. If you do this I'll forget the pinnacle!
thank you, keep your good work!

Absolutely brilliant and versatile program. Forget Windows Movie Maker. Have total mastery over video encoding. It's filters are superb too.
If you're into video processing then this is a must have tool. I simply wouldn't be without it. Contrary to what people think it's not exclusively AVI files it edits: it contains it's own frameserver (creates a "dummy" AVI file) and you can use it with dedicated frameservers such as AviSynth: I've recently fed it a H.264 video via AviSynth, used VirtualDub's brilliant filters, and then used it's frameserver to feed the output to an MPEG2 encoder: the only "real" video files being the H.264 at the beginning and the MPEG2 video at the end. Fantastic.
It's perhaps not the easiest thing to get to grips with at first it's not designed to be idiot proof so read some tutorials if you want to get the best out of it. Once you know it's capabilities you'll wonder how you ever managed without it.

My husband and I have been using Virtualdub for years for our video files. It's made storing our massive movie collection much easier. Several hundred movies and drama series fit on hard drives instead of entire walls.
It's easy to use... I can use it and I don't have to understand anything complicated. Word of advice, the better the original condition of the video, the better the compressed version will be. Hands down, digital signal capture is better after compression, but free is free.
