DirectShow FilterPack consists of 10 Source- and Splitter filters (stage 1 and 2). That's because another piece of software called FFDShow is already capable of decoding a lot of encoded/encrypted audio and video, but FFDShow can do much more than that!
DirectShow FilterPack greatly relies on FFDShow and FFDShow is almost completely useless without Splitter filters, but DirectShow FilterPack and FFDShow together can play/render almost anything! Many Splitter filters and a couple of Source filters are also embedded in Media Player Classic (a DirectShow media player). But Media Player Classic can't play/render lossless audio for instance, so in this case DirectShow FilterPack is still usefull.
Unlike codecpacks, DirectShow FilterPack doesn't consist of one single codec or encoder. This means you can not create your own music/videos with it. It can only be used to play/render audio and video files. And besides, you don't even need those (big) codecpacks if you only need DivX/XviD/H.264 and MP3/AAC/Vorbis to create your own music/videos for instance!
Neither does DirectShow FilterPack include duplicate DirectShow media filters. Something you see quite often with some codecpacks is they include 2 or 3 DirectShow filters for the same purpose. They have FFDShow for Vorbis Audio decoding for instance, but then they also include the CoreVorbis DirectShow Filter, or even worse, the OGG DirectShow Filters from years ago. This can cause conflicts/errors when Windows is trying to build a DirectShow Graph in order to play your favorite music/videos. No wonder a lot of codecpacks are very big with all these duplicate and useless DirectShow filters inside.
Nor does DirectShow FilterPack contain a DirectShow media player. So not a single file-type will be associated with any kind of DirectShow media player during the installation/registration of DirectShow FilterPack. DirectShow FilterPack is a no-nonsense lite-weight package of only the most important media filters. Hence it's possible to maintain a very small filesize of around 1.6MB!
The developer doesn't like installers and that's the reason why he is using BAT-files to install/register all the DirectShow filters. All the BAT-files do is letting Windows know the DirectShow filters in my package are available and ready for use by adding them to the Windows Registry. This way Windows can use them to build DirectShow Graphs. Or in other words: this way you can use them to play your favorite music/videos you couldn't play before.
Features of DirectShow FilterPack 5:
- The duration of VBR MP3-files is reported incorrectly by the Gabest - MPA Splitter.
- The Gabest - OGG Splitter does support Theora Video, but only to a certain degree.
- The DCoder - BASS Source Filter, besides the documented formats, also supports MPEG(4) Audio (MP3 and AAC) out of the box, but isn't enabled by default. If you really want to use the BASS Source Filter to play MP3 and AAC files, you should manually uninstall both the Gabest - MPA Splitter and the BASS Source Filter. Then go the BASS Source Filter directory, open "Registration.ini" in Notepad, change the 0 of aac, m4a and mp3 to 1 and reinstall the BASS Source Filter.
- The Gabest - AVI Splitter supports incomplete, semi-corrupt and interleaved AVI-files, which the standard AVI Splitter shipped with Windows does not.
- The Gabest - MPEG Splitter is also capable of splitting H.264 Video and AAC Audio.
- Although the Gabest - MP4 Splitter supports most MOV-files (QuickTime), for some audio formats you'll still need QuickTime (Alternative).
